I read an article this morning on Huffington Post about why is it okay to make fun of Honey Boo Boo but not Quvenzhané? Some would argue that The Onion shouldn’t have apologized because they equally make fun of Honey Boo Boo.
I would argue that The Onion has not equally made fun of both girls. I think their apology was necessary because there is no justifiable reason for insulting a child. If they wanted to make fun they could have made up what her acceptance speech would have been or made a joke about even after getting nominated for an Oscars she couldn’t afford a real dog and had to settle for a dog purse or forget teacup dogs, Quvenzhané sets trend with dog purse on red carpet. Maybe those aren’t sarcastic enough but at least they wouldn’t have been downright insulting.
As far as the comparison of Honey Boo Boo to Quvenzhané; doing a reality TV show moreso sets you up for public criticism and ridicule. And even still I wouldn’t want anyone to disrespect Honey Boo Boo in the way that The Onion did to Quvenzhané. I just don’t think that there is any justifiable reason, in the name of humor, to berate our children. If this is how we talk about our kids, how do you expect the rest of the world to view and treat our children…or what they think of how we treat our own kids?
